Germany tops overall medal table at 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships

The 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic came to a close today with Germany finishing at the top of the medal table. Out of 13 events, Germany medalled in 10, taking away a total of five World Championship titles in the Junior Women and Men's Single Sculls, Junior Men's Double and Quadruple Sculls and Women's Pair. The remaining eight titles were shared among New Zealand (Junior Women's Coxless Four), Switzerland (Junior Men's Coxed Four), Romania (Junior Women's Pair and Junior Men's Four), Greece (Junior Men's Pair), France (Junior Women's Double Sculls), Great Britain (Junior Women's Eight) and USA (Junior Men's Eight). In total 13 countries walked away from these Championships with medals.

Five finals had already been raced in the rain on Saturday, leaving the remaining eight to be contended today. At the end of the day a number of significant marks had been achieved. Azerbaijan earned their first medal ever at a junior world event. Switzerland earned their first gold medal in 16 years at a junior event and the United States earned their first medal in the men's single in 36 years.
